Shed Repairs

We have removed the Young Adult and Children's Sheds after experiencing 2 storm related soakings! ALL of our YA and kids books were damaged twice and so we are now listening to Mother Nature as the next Winter Storm approaches. There are a few YA titles on the top shelf in the remaining library and we will be repairing and replacing the YA and Kids Sheds ASAP. 

The water was actually much higher but this was the first time I could get out and take a pic.

Kindness Clams and Oversize Books

Kindness Clams made their debut at our LFL today. Feel free to take one. 

We are also are starting to display some of the oversized books we have. We'll put out oversized books from time to time for your reading enjoyment.

How Our Little Free Library Works!

The Montauk Little Free Library belongs to everyone and we want to thank EVERYONE that has used it over the last couple of years. The books are always FREE and anyone is welcome to use the library. If you find bookmarks or other treats in the library, those are for the taking as well.

How does it work? Simple.

Take Books, Share Books, Leave Books

TAKE BOOKS

If you see something you'd like to read, take it! In our library we try to keep a wide variety of reading materials...our kid books go fast.

SHARE BOOKS

When you're finished with a book, you may return it, pass it on to a friend or even put it in a different Little Free Library.

LEAVE BOOKS

Finished with a book, leave it. If our library is full you may leave the books on the front porch (if we're not home) or bring them to another Little Free Library in the area.

THERE'S MORE

Our library is also a Geocache Site. The Geocache is not IN the library. Geocaching is a great activity in our COVID environment. Check it out.

As part of the Little Free Library Network OUR MISSION is to inspire a love of reading, build community, and spark creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world.

Our Little Free Library does a lot but we are not a library book return! Full disclosure - read this awesome book before sending it back to the library of origin.

It's a 2010 Newbery Honor Book, has a sequel and series if your young reader loves it as much as we did!

We’re deeply saddened to report that the Founder of Little Free Libraries, Todd H. Bol, passed away Thursday, October 18.

Todd spent much of the last decade working towards his vision of a world where neighbors know each other by name, and everyone has access to books. He was heartened by the network of more than 75,000 Little Free Library stewards around the world dedicated to literacy and community. If you would like to leave your own memory or thanks click here and share.

Todd was more than just the creative force behind Little Free Library. He was a teacher, a lifelong entrepreneur, a father and a husband. He is survived by his wife Susan, daughter Allison and son Austin. Austin said, “He was the best, most generous, goofy, and kind person. He taught us to be kind to others. To many he was an innovator and genuine change maker. To us, he was dad. We will miss him always.”

We've been so busy that we haven't had much time to post about all the exciting Montauk Little Free Library news. Once again we want to thank our neighbors, friends and local bookstore book bombers for making our library a success.

OUR FIRST KINDNESS ROCK - ROCKS!

Thank you to our kind neighbors who surprised us with a Kindness Rock.

Kindness Rocks are painted with messages and left in random places for others to find. The messages can be varied and are intended to uplift a person and may also inspire them to spread the word. 

The Kindness Rock Project motto "Leave one, share one, keep one," is very compatible to our Little Free Library mantra "Take a book, share a book."

We LOVE it. Thank you. You made our day.

HELLO TENNESSEE!

Bill and I were very surprised and beside ourselves with joy today when we received one of my very favorite books, Star Girl by Jerry Sprinelli, as a donation from Blackman Farm Little Free Library in Tennessee. 
We like to wrap our paperback books in clear shelf paper for a longer life so we signed the donation with our stamp and gave it a special wrap before putting it back out. Pictured below is he Blackman Farm LFL stamp. Also pictured below is the inside front cover with our stamp and your original note. 
How much farther might Star Girl travel? Keep an eye out for it in your Little Free Library and thanks Blackman Farm LFL very much for making our day.

MONTAUK NEIGHBORS ROCK!

Thank you Neighbors for making the Montauk Little Free Library a success. Bill & I thank everyone for their donations and returns. Remember this little library is FREE TO ALL!

We also want to thank the Westerly Friends of the Library for their summer book sale. As donors and buyers, the summer and winter sales keep our library full of books and  help our beautiful Westerly Public Library buy new materials.

WOW WHAT A WEEKEND!

Montauk Little Free Library has been so busy! Most of our children's board books - gone. Many of our children's titles - gone. We have received a couple back. Thank you. Also, we hope the reader that read Jurassic Park enjoyed it! Thank you for returning it.

We also received a fantastic surprise this weekend by the Savoy Bookstore & Cafe! Thank you to "A & Z" for filling up our Little Free Library with young adult and adult paperbacks.

We've added some more children's paperbacks and will be getting some more board books in the future. Thanks to everyone who is being respectful with the library and to all the readers we have on Montauk that are enjoying their summer with a little reading.

MONTAUK IS READING!

Our Little Free Library opened quietly and has been receiving a steady stream of visitors young and old. We've also had some returns and some small donations that we are very grateful for. Thank you to our neighbor that left two Irma Bombeck books - she was a favorite of my Mom. Your gift brought back memories of both. One was already borrowed!

Thank you to our neighbor that donated Deadly Shores, part of the Destroyermen novels, from New York Times best selling author Taylor Anderson. And Thank you also for Ashes of Victory by another New York Times best selling science fiction writer David Weber!

Probably the best part of running the library so far has been reading some of the notes from our guests. Here's to a great summer, keep reading Montauk!
